Ventilator One More Day
When we got back from radiation the doctor (Villalobos) was waiting of us ... or he just happened to be standing there. Anyway I asked him about the ventilator and he indicated that it was too late in the day especially since she was borderline on being ready. I said I understood but told him that he would have to talk to her. She is now back, thinking clearly and certainly wants to be in charge of her own health even if she cannot talk. (Though I would agrue that Mom has been fired from that job as she must have been leaving in the worst pain imaginable for a long time with myeloma ... but I think she has learned her lesson). He went in to met with Mom. He told her that it was too late in the day to risk her safety. The staff is much leaner in the evening and he just did not want something to happen to Mom's breathing in the middle of the night. He promised to sedate her so that she could sleep. He would make sure she was un-sedated at 6am then she will be tested for breathing ... if all goes well he will personally take the tube from her throat. She was OK with that -- thank goodness!
