Melphalan

The news today was not as good as we had hoped. The dexamethasone did not keep the cancer at the same level as before so this month Dr. Thomas is adding melphalan to the dexamethasone this mouth. Melphalan is a chemotherapy that was developed in the 1960's. The other newer chemotherapies could impact Mom's heart so that is why melphalan is the drug of choice. There are not any major side effects other than she will have decreased blood counts which will increase Mom's risk of getting an infection. She will take the melphalan in a pill form for 4 days along with the dexamethasone. Hopefully this new combination will knock the cancer back on its butt and not lead to any bad side effects.
